How Many Demerit Points Do I Have?
Each licence in NSW is allowed to accrue a certain amount of demerit points within a 3 year period before the licence will be suspended by the RMS.
It is important to remember that everyone starts with 0 demerits. Each demerit point offence accumulates until the total is past the relevant limit, and the licence is suspended.
The limits are:
- Unrestricted licence: 13 points
- Provisional P2 licence: 7 points
- Provisional P1 licence: 4 points
- Learner licence: 4 points
- Good behaviour licence: 2 points for term of bond
If you exceed these limits, your licence will be suspended. An unrestricted licence can be suspended for the following periods of time:
- 13 – 15 points: 3 months
- 16 – 19 points: 4 months
- 20+ points: 5 months
Learner and P1 licences will be suspended for 3 months for exceeding the demerit point limit.
It should be noted that there are more serious penalties if you have exceeded your demerit point limit twice in 5 years.
